How to Study

The Foundation Course is intended as a starter for those wishing to train as pastors, but has also proved ideal for use as a church training programme, for instructing a wider range of church leadership.  When used as a church training programme it can operate in the local church under the direction of a local tutor, usually the local church leader.  Used in local Bible Schools, it is at the discretion of the local team, and supplementary to their existing instruction method.  Because the modules are written in English, translation into the local language, verbally or in writing, may be necessary.

The courses work best where local tutors have a group of students taking the same module, and can arrange for group work, when students may discuss the lesson and share ideas prior to attempting the test paper for that lesson.  The local tutor may then encourage them, and guide their studies.  The College recommended method of presentation is

  • The students read the lesson notes in private study
  • They discuss the material as a small group (of between 6 and 12 students, where this can be arranged)
  • They complete a test paper
  • The work is marked by the local tutor.

The local tutor also encourages each student to use a library or other source of books, and spend time in further reading on a regular basis.  He marks the student's coursework, and ensures that a sample of Diploma student's coursework is sent to the UK for second marking.  In some cases Certificates of completion are awarded by the Open Missionary Training College and in others by the local Bible College.
